Reader Dan Owen is on the road far, far away from the London Stadium and sends us this. “On a long drive from Matadi to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo….. great relief that lorry drivers are on strike today ahd the road is uncommonly clear and great relief that Jackson’s strikes are doing the job and road ahead for Chels might be similarly clearing.”
HALF-TIME! West Ham 0-2 ChelseaWest Ham were sleepy and pretty dreadful for the first part of that opening period and were punished by two calm finishes from the often-maligned Nicolas Jackson. They’ve shown signs of a revival but simply have to score the next goal if they’re to try and win a first home point of the season. Lopetegui is miffed beyond belief, as are most of the angrily muttering home fans.
45+2 The free-kick bobbles into the Chelsea box and is cleared for a corner. Bowen loops it in before an offside flag goes up and the half-time whistle goes.
45+1 min We’re into the first of just two added minutes. A first bit of Argentina on Brazil fouling action as Fernandez leaves Paqueta in a heap.
44 min Yellow card for Fofana as he brings down the galloping Summerville. Free-kick to West Ham out on the left. Mavropanos get his head to the cross but can only divert it wide.
43 min It’s been a bit of a skittish display by Sanchez so far and he misjudges a bouncing ball over the top for Kudus and almost pays for it as the West Ham man hooks it back in from the touchline. The danger passes but the hints of a revival are there, even if it’s via Chelsea doing something daft.
42 min Palmer and Madueke have been quiet so far and yet Chelsea are already two goals to the good. Just a feeling, though, that West Ham aren’t out of this yet. They’ve had by far the better of it since Jackson’s second goal.
41 min Soucek almost makes an instant impact as the ball falls to him about 12 yards out in the Chelsea box. He thumps a low shot through various legs but it’s straight at Sanchez.
39 min Paqueta is bundled over by Cucurella as the Brazilian tries to skip down the right. No foul though and the Spaniard takes a throw-in before hoofing clear. It’s gone very silent in the London Stadium, if you don’t count the manic screeching of Lopetegui.
38 min Can the blue collar work of Soucek get West Ham motoring a bit? He’s an extra aerial threat in the box as well.
37 min Lopetegui isn’t having it and calls for Tomas Soucek. Guido Rodriguez will be the one to sheepishly make way. Before the change can take place, Madueke angles a shot wide of the West Ham post. Kind of embarrassed applause as the Real Betis man goes off.
34 min Jackson, with a hat-trick on his mind, cuts in from the left but Mavropanos gets a good foot in. Looks like West Ham are going to make a tactical change.
33 min Krishnamoorthy reminds me on email that AI predicted Jackson opening the scoring! The bit about Alvarez making it 1-1 from distance has malfunctioned though.
32 min Kudus has the ball in the Chelsea net but he’s clearly offside and knows it. An easy one for VAR. Still, West Ham are coming back into this.
31 min West Ham are racking up the corner count but nothing is coming from them. Some pressure now at least and Paqueta’s left-foot shot is blocked before having the chance to fly goalbound.
VAR – NO PENALTY! The hold on Summerville is considered “fleeting” by VAR man Stuart Atwell and the onfield decision by Sam Bennett stands.
28 min Lopetegui is going mad again but this time it’s due to a penalty appeal as Summerville goes to ground after being pulled back by Fofana in the area. It’s being looked at.
27 min Chelsea really haven’t had to do much to get this 2-0 lead. Kudus has looked the most lively West Ham attacker and he cuts in from the left and shoots from just inside the box but his shot deflects up and into the waiting arms of Sanchez.
26 min An elaborate drag back and flick from Paqueta almost creates something on the edge of the Chelsea area but nope. Style marks but no substance.
25 min Lopetegui is going absolutely bonkers on the touchline, shouting and gesturing in the very angry man style.
23 min Mavropanos and Kilman come up for the corner, trying to make their height advantage count, but Bowen goes near post. It’s cleared before Paqueta sets up Bowen for a shot from the edge of the area which balloons well over the bar.
22 min A sloppy pass from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez almost gifts West Ham an opportunity but Chelsea defend. The hosts drive again and win a corner down the right which Bowen will take.
20 min Can West Ham find a quick response? They win their first corner of the game down the left but it’s cleared by a Chelsea head and when the ball ends back with Areola, the disgruntled murmurs grow louder.
No surprise here as Jackson doubles the lead with a cool finish. This was far too easy. No pressure on the ball as Caicedo plays a straight pass down the middle and Jackson has a free run on goal. He accelerates towards the area and slots a simple left-footer past Areola.
GOAL! West Ham 0-2 Chelsea (Jackson 18)
17 min Better possession for West Ham now although Lopetegui, in blue jeans and grey sweatshirt, is shouting from the touchline. And not in a good way.
15 min Paqueta goes for goal but doesn’t catch it and the ball smacks low into the wall. A waste.
14 min Free-kick for West Ham after a marauding run down the left from Emerson. He’s clattered by Fofana as he drifts inside and this is a good chance for the Hammers to do something. Paqueta looks interested.
11 min Chelsea should really be 2-0 up the more you look at that Palmer chance. West Ham have to be careful here they don’t leave themselves a mountain to climb.
10 min Palmer is clattered to the ground again. West Ham are watching him closely. But not nearly enough it seems as the Chelsea No 10 finds space in the box and sweeps a shot wide from 10 yards after being set up by Jackson’s pass. A position from which you’d expect him to score – or hit the target at least – far more often than not.
9 min Chelsea knocking it around well here. Good players + early lead = a bit of swagger.
7 min Better from West Ham as Kudus whips in a cross from the right but it just evades two West Ham shirts, Summerville the closest. Something to lift the home crowd at least.
6 min What a start for Chelsea then. An assist for Sancho and a goal for Jackson. Lopetegui will be furious that West Ham just switched off from that free-kick. Areola didn’t cover himself in glory either by allowing Jackson’s shot to creep past him.
GOAL! West Ham 0-1 Chelsea (Jackson 4)
Boom! Chelsea take a quick free-kick with West Ham sleeping. Jackson is played free down the left by Sancho and, despite the narrow angle similar to Kudus’ moments earlier, he cuts into the box and slips his shot between the goalkeeper’s legs. Chelsea lead.
Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea slots home despite being under pressure from Edson Alvarez of West Ham. Photograph: Henry Browne/Getty Images4 min Kudus, playing on the right, gets the first chance of the game. He finds space in the box but has to pull the trigger with his right foot from an angle and it’s straight at the goalkeeper. But then at the other end…
3 min Chelsea in white shirts, white shorts and blue socks today. Think Italian away strip. They enjoy their first bit of possession before Cole Palmer is caught. He’s up on his feet though.
1 min Paqueta rolls the ball back for West Ham and we’re in play. A huge roar from the home crowd.
The two sides are out. It seems a pleasant enough day in East London and the pitch looks splendid.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, who spent nearly two years at West Ham as an assistant, says this of his decision to start Sancho. “It was not simple because we have more players. But we decided on Jadon and hope it is the right decision.”
Summerville’s inclusion for West Ham is interesting. Then again, I’ve just had this from a mate (currently in a pub in Newport on his way to watch Leeds play Cardiff; the decor on the wall includes Michael Jackson, an American flag and Laurel & Hardy): “Hmmm. I think his level may be Championship. Really like him but he has one way of playing. Cut in from the left and shoot. Never goes the other way – outside. Teams found him out towards the end of last season.”
In this weird world we live in, I’ve been sent an AI prediction of the game from Sportscasting. This is what happens, apparently. If any of this plays out, have permission to be freaked. Then again, it seems kinda reasonable.
Nicolas Jackson opens the scoring
Edson Alvarez levels for West Ham with a stunning long-range effort
Chelsea nick victory through Christopher Nkunku
TNT have got Joe Cole pitchside which seems a good idea given that he showed off his silky skills at both clubs. Cole, a good talker, says Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has the “hardest job in the Premier League”. He worries that Chelsea are being run purely as a business.
Chelsea are the second highest scorers in the Premier League this season with eight. That’s just one goal fewer than Erling Haaland. Not bad, eh. Thanks to the decent GD via the 6-2 win at Wolves, if they win by two goals or more today they’ll jump into second place. A win for the Hammers would see them join Chelsea on seven points and lift the hosts from 14th to ninth.
West Ham Women’s team are also in action which is a bit rubbish if you actually support the men as well and want to watch both. Who came up with that scheduling? TV, I know. You can keep track of that WSL clash – Man Utd v West Ham – here. Emillia Hawkins will guide you through. It kicks off at 12pm.
So it’s a first Chelsea start for Jadon Sancho. He did well coming off the bench at Bournemouth so Enzo Maresca feels it’s worth putting the winger in from the start.
Enzo Fernandez returns in midfield while Tosin gets a first top-flight start in the Chelsea rearguard. Renato Veiga, Pedro Neto and Axel Disasi all drop to the bench.
For West Ham, there’s also a debut for a wideman as new signing Crysenscio Summerville gets the nod. Lucas Paqueta returns as expected, with Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio the two to make way from the XI who started in the 1-1 draw at Fulham last week.

Via nice images from social media, we have the two teams…
PreambleSo far this season, it’s been far more fun to be an away supporter of West Ham and Chelsea. The Hammers’ travelling faithful have seen their side pick up four points from short trips to Crystal Palace and Fulham while Chelsea’s have made the journey home on the back of a 6-2 thumping of Wolves and a 1-0 success at Bournemouth. At home though, it’s been a very different story. West Ham have suffered back-to-back defeats (against Aston Villa and Manchester City admittedly) while Chelsea have just a single point at Stamford Bridge courtesy of a disappointing 1-1 draw with Palace.
Those Covid/empty stadium-season discrepancies surely can’t continue, or at least Julen Lopetegui hopes they won’t. David Moyes was accused of making the Hammers’ attack less than the sum of its parts and Lopetegui was supposed to reverse the equation when being appointed in the summer. It hasn’t happened so far and new manager goodwill is quick to burn out.
The good news for the Spaniard is that West Ham have strong recent history in this fixture, winning three of the last five on home soil and scoring three goals in each of those victories. Can that continue? Will the Hammers finally click? Will Chelsea have one of their good days? On the evidence of this season so far, nobody knows. Best find out then. It should be fun!
